Running Riot in '84 / Live & Loud!!

A 2xLP combo package released in 2010 that includes the second Cock Sparrer LP and a live record. The LP is a departure from Shock Troops - less simplistic or “more mature,” whichever you prefer. I actually quite like it a lot, but I also remember playing it after a night at the bar for @darrickfabian and after half of song, his response of, “Jesus this is terrible!” - and he’s not necessarily wrong! Perhaps this is not a great entry point for Cock Sparrer, or maybe if you’re expecting some meat and potatoes street punk and you get some of the weirdness in Running Riot 84, your first impression may be off. Putting myself in his shoes, a lot of these songs have a quasi dance-meets-Oi mashup vibe with a four-on-the-floor disco beat and weird guitar effects - even the opening song has hand-clap sounds. The cover art and title suggests more of a gritty punk record and maybe what this is instead is a solid 80’s rock album, complete with synths! That said, this record grew on me and I still think it’s good despite what Darrick says. Or maybe it was the beer talking.

The live record has more of their established punk numbers, kicking it off with Riot Squad, and some even earlier songs from the 70’s like Runnin Riot and We Love You. Sounds pretty good for a live record, but I’m generally not of a fan of live recordings.
