This compilation revives D.O.N.D.O.N.’s 1991 Last Warning LP along with a handful of comp tracks, finally making a limited press impossible-to-find release slightly more accessible (after all, 700 > 200). If you’re familiar with early ‘90s Japanese hardcore, you already know what to expect: thrashy, blistering speed, with just enough melody to keep things interesting. Gauze, Final Bombs, and Death Side come to mind. The lead guitar work shines here and there, though it doesn’t quite hit levels of Chelsea (Death Side), but it holds its own.
The LP tracks are solid, and the comp tracks are equally solid if not better. They may not have the same name recognition as their peers, and maybe weren’t as stand out or groundbreaking, but still deserve some love. BTW, D.O.N.D.O.N. stands for “Detestation of Negative, Destruction of Nuclear” — a terrible name, but they make up for it with speed, raw power and that singular Japanese hardcore weirdness that’s hard not to love.
