This one by Death Comes Along is basically 5 tracks on an LP. The record opener is sounds more accessible than the debut, and dare I say, even approaching “good” - still laden with textured soundscapes with heavy effects, odd time signatures, and meandering guitar solos, and ranting vocals, but somehow feels like there’s more to it. This feels influenced by everything from Hawkwind to Brian Eno to Black Sabbath to Crass…but of course, being several minutes long, it eventually does devolve into a sort of audioliminal space as a transition to the second track Death Death Death - which again, actually takes the form of a song. Side A closes with a vocal only track, Children of the Death: instead of shrieking or death howls, it’s a very creepy whisper. ASMR for psychos, perhaps.
The flip starts with a bunch of synth noise mimicking some AM radio noise you might hear when driving a lonely road in the country, complete with a low rumbling that might make you feel like a flying saucer is tailing you. This goes on for at least 10 minutes before the closer wraps it up with some atonal moaning, with very quiet finger picking guitar in the background. If Side A is not for the faint of heart, Side B is approaching unhinged.
This will never be a favorite of mine, or even a genre I wish to pursue, but as a Crow enthusiast, I’m glad it’s in my collection and can say I enjoy it more than the first album.
