We Are Above You

Aside from having the best-fitting album title for the band name, this kicks off with a much slower, sludgier, stonier endeavor than the 4-track EP previously reviewed, but the album as a whole doesn’t necessarily stay there - Clouds finds room for depth within the sludge. As such, it is a bit unfair to pigeon-hole to a single genre, while there’s a through line on the whole album there are influences bleeding through from all over the place. Songs vibes range from dark and doomy, to high-energy and fist pumping, to spacey and psyche-y, to straight up jaunty. In an alternative universe, some of these songs would be on the alternative rock radio station, but that window closed a long time ago.

A big album in sound and in stature (2x12” in a nice cardstock sleeve), this is one that I don’t listen to enough and sounds good 15 years after the fact. The second disc has covers - one each by Blue Öyster Cult and the Kinks, and two by Guided by Voices.
