This one is the second Cocteaus album - and it does mark a bridge from the gothic and post-punk sound of Garlands to the dreamy vibes of Treasure, with plenty blending between the two. One song stands out as a cotton candy light-hearted affair (Sugar Hiccup) - but the rest of are of a darker flavor- and all have the searing noisescapes you’d expect from Robin Guthrie. Multifoiled is the hardest track to pin down, it’s almost like a weird jazzy lounge song in some ways that sounds like it’s be on the Twin Peaks soundtrack.
The songs are good but tend to be a bit monotonous, but not in the hypnotizing way of the first record - the first four songs plod along, until you get to In Our Angelhood, which is almost punk in its pace and to me is the best track. Musette & Drums is a very close second in terms of my favorite. I’m ok with the monotony for the most part but the opening track “When Mama Was a Moth” is somehow both weird and boring at once. Overall I do like this record since it’s highlights are very high, but the low lights are forgettable.
