Coliseum comes charging back from the dragging previous record with their excellent 4th LP, Sister Faith. If their previous record was too long and meandering, this one cuts to the chase right out of the gates with the first two songs, and continues that trend throughout - the intensity is back, although the crusty / d-beat influences are long gone and the Fugazi influences are more present - that and some grunge, stoner rock, and doomy sections too. Not all the songs are fist pumpers - Love Under Will in particularly starts stark and slow and builds up to a sincerely powerful chorus - but there’s at least 3 songs per side that are catchy whereas I can’t say that all about House With A Curse.
I could do without a few tracks on this record (Used Blood), but the good songs are really good. Overall, I like this record a fair amount, and it’s much better than the previous one - maybe it helps to think of House With A Curse as the delineator between the hardcore Coliseum and the post-hardcore Coliseum.
PS the Kentucky derby is dumb but bourbon is good.
