Dio’s second album builds off of the first - if not replicates it, and I am ok with that. This is as good a record as Holy Diver. It follows a similar formula: Track 1 - We Rock is like a better version of Holy Diver’s opener Stand Up and Shout: a high-energy rocker. Track 2 is the somewhat epic title track on both albums; and both also close out with a somewhat sludgy / dirty song - on this one, it’s Egypt (The Chains are On) to Holy Diver’s Shame On The Night. Why spoil a good thing? As a sophomore effort, The Last In Line delivers: the drumming is tighter, and there’s more influences sprinkled in - some Iomi-esque riffs, some Maiden galloping bass lines, some Exciter speed metal, even some glam metal. I could do without One Night In The City and Eat Your Heart Out, but I pretty much like the rest of the songs on The Last In Line, so it’s hard to pick a favorite. Also, it wouldn’t be a Dio record without at least 1 reference to a rainbow, and there’s at least two throughout this album.
