This is somewhat an embarrassing to own because I spent $28 on it on Record Store Day in 2011. Picture discs are pretty silly but it does look cool with this fantasy artwork (at least Side A). Sadly the music doesn’t live up to the art.
Music-wise, pretty standard heavy metal as one might expect - and Dio’s voice showing his age a bit: his register is lower, but he’s still got pipes. The record starts off strong with the title track but I pretty quickly got bored. The music sounds overproduced and too clean making the riffs sound pedestrian, almost like some kind of third rate glam band or stock formula “metal music.” Hard to explain other than dragging and uninspired, fully lacking the energy I’d want from a heavy metal record. Oh well. I didn’t hear the word “rainbow” uttered anywhere…but there is a song called “Rock & Roll” which is a low-light of Side A. Side B just continues the decline. Remove Dio’s vocals and it sounds like background music to a 80s news promo about BMXing or surfing.
